January 12th has had some pretty big events in sports happen. Including a couple of things happening to the Rams franchise.

  • 1906 - Until this point, there was no forward pass in football. Today was the day the forward pass was legalized by the football rules committee.
  • 1921 - Remember the Black Sox scandal that got 8 men suspended from baseball for life? If not, watch the movie 8 Men Out, it's a great movie. Well, on this day Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis became the first commissioner of baseball, and he was the one who banned the players.
  • 1946 - Here is the first of two Rams facts today. On this day the Cleveland Rams were granted permission to move to Los Angeles.
  • 1969 - It's easy to forget, but the Super Bowl wasn't always played in February, and on this day back in 1969, it was the first time the name "Super Bowl" was used to name the game and it was a big one as the New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts 16 to 7, which was considered a huge upset. One that Joe Namath called before the game and is the only reason he's in the Hall of Fame.
  • 1999 - At the time an anonymous bidder paid $3 million for Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball from the record breaking season. That anonymous bidder? Spawn creator and comic book hero Tood McFarlane.Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball was sold at auction in New York for $3 million to an anonymous bidder.
  • 2016 - And the final part of today in sports history brings us back to the Rams as it was today two years ago the NFL approved St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke's plan to move the Rams back to LA.
