Metallica’s James Hetfield Not Interested in Collaborating With Lady Gaga Again
Despite the technical mishaps, Metallica's collaborative performance with Lady Gaga at the 2017 Grammy awards was spirited as the pop sensation provided a new kind of edge to the band's blistering "Moth Into Flame." With the buzz from the set still in the air, drummer Lars Ulrich expressed a desire to take this joint effort further in the future, but frontman James Hetfield appears to see the future a bit differently.
In an interview with the Chilean newspaper La Tercera, the vocalist / guitarist was asked about the Grammy effort and if he would like to work with Lady Gaga again. "I have no interest," he replied, adding, "But just being with her gave me a different energy, she goes beyond the limits, like us." (translation via Google)
This is a far cry from Ulrich's beliefs, which he expressed to Rolling Stone in mid-February. Calling Gaga the "quintessential perfect fifth member" of Metallica, the drummer went on to praise her "attitude" and "outlook on everything" as "so awesome."
Convincingly, the skinsman continued, “We already started fast-forwarding to the next chapter when we can do more of this. It’s not one of those ’20 lawyers, strategists and managers trying to force two people from two different worlds to figure out how to spend four minutes together on a national telecast.’ Of any of these undertakings, this is about as organic and authentic as there’s ever been one. We’re just getting started.”
Whether these plans to work with Gaga again pan out, one thing that is certain is that it will be on the back burner as Metallica continue their "WorldWired" tour in support of 2016's Hardwired... To Self-Destruct. They'll hit the road in North America this summer with Avenged Sevenfold, Volbeat and Gojira providing support on select dates and for a list of all stops and further info, check our 2017 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
