Have you ever seen those movie ads on TV filled with gushing quotes from critics and thought to yourself, “I saw that movie; it was terrible. Where did they find these positive reviews?” If you have, you’re not alone — and you’re going to love ScreenCrush’s newest series, Critics Are Raving!, which balances the cinematic scales with trailers full of slightly more accurate (and slightly more negative) lines from reviews. Real critics. Real quotes. Really bad movies. That’s what’s Critics Are Raving! is all about.

For our 14th episode we’ve got one of the most contentious movies of 2017 so far - Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson in the big-screen adaptation of the cult manga and anime of the same name. Many viewers were unenthused about Johansson assuming the lead role in a landmark Japanese franchise, and a lot of critics weren’t too pleased either. Its Rotten Tomatoes score isn’t terrible, and some reviews praised the movie’s imaginative visuals. But a lot of others were left befuddled by the dopey plot and a twist that left them feeling ripped off. That meant it was time for Critics Are Raving! to return once more.

Want to see what the real critics TV spot for Ghost in the Shell looked like? (Yes, there really was one.) Here it is:
