Least Populous County in America is in our Backyard
On today's "5 Random Facts" we learned about Loving County, the least populous county in the United States.
As I started reading about this geographical curiosity I became more an more fascinated. Here are some MORE random facts about Loving County, Texas...so near and yet a world unto itself.
As of the 2010 census the population of Loving County was 82. But, it's population in the 2000 census was only 67. So, with a population increase of over 22%, I guess you could argue that Loving in one of the most booming counties in America.
In the 2000 census, out of 67 residents, not a single resident identified themselves as "black, African-American, Native American, or Asian." 6 identified themselves as "other"
The only community in Loving County is Mentone which is also the county seat. The county courthouse is the only building (other than houses or barns) in the county that has two floors.
Loving County has the highest household income of any county in Texas. Almost every job in the county is either based on ranching, the oil and gas drilling industry or county government services.
Loving County has voted for the Republican presidential candidate in every election since 1972. Except in 1992 when Ross Perot eked out the win.
There are no schools in Loving County. The school system was closed in 1972 because enrollment had fallen to 2 students.
It was the first county in Texas to have a female sheriff. Edna Reed Clayton Dewees was appointed to the job in 1945.
Loving County is the kind of place you'd have to go out of your way to visit. The interstate skirts well around it. It's not really "between" anywhere that sees much traffic. It might be fun to drive or ride (it would only take a couple hours to get there) to Loving County just to say you've visited the most sparsely populated county in America. If you do, you should probably pack a lunch. Loving County only has one café and it's not always open. For dining and entertainment you have to go to one of the bigger nearby cities. Like Toyah.
