In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Veterans day is a big deal, at least in my humble opinion it is.  As I understand it, it is a day to remember the unfathomable sacrafices so many have made for thier country in the past, and are willing to make here now and in the future.  As I sit in my comfy chair, at a desk inside a building here in Midland, Texas in the United States of America....in a country where I can vote, run for political office, or not, say whatever I want, do whatever I want with my life, be whomever I want and love who ever I want....I am fully aware of the sacrafices that were made by many in order for me to be able to do all those things.  I am fully aware that I live in a place unlike all others, a place of freedom, opportunity, progress and constant improvement.  No matter whats going on here in the land of opportunity, no matter how bad we may think we have it,  I think so many of us loose sight of the fact that it could be so much worse.  We are so lucky to live where were we live and to be able to enjoy the things we enjoy here in American, and so many of us forget that good, bad or indifferent all of this came at a price.  A very high price that someone elses sons and daughters paid without question or complaint.

Complaining about all the things that are wrong with our country seems to be super trendy right now in this age of techonology, where anything we say and think can be shot out into the world for all to see in a matter of seconds.

I wonder if the people doing all that complaining ever stop to think about what it took for them to be able to complain in the first place? Someone laid down thier life so that you could bad mouth our goverment, someone lost a son/daughter so that you could make fun of our President, regardless of his (whatever they may be) shortcomings and/or mistakes, he is still the man who runs the greatest country in the world, and a mother lost a child so that you could critisize, pick apart and all together poop on, not so much the man himself, but rather the very institutution of the presidency. (please note I am in no way saying that I do or do not agreen with the policies of the president specifically or that I do or do not approve of this actions and/or ideas as a president)

Somewhere along the line someones husband or wife said goodbye to the one person they were ready to spend the rest of thier life with in order for you to be able to not use your right to vote, and not activley participate in the running or your town/community.  A daughter/son lost one of the most important people in thier lives so that you could live and live comfortably in this beautiful, amazing country we live in (actually many daughters and sons lost many fathers and mothers).

What I am trying to say is that today as you should everyday, have some respect for the men and women willing to make the sacrafices it takes for us to live how we live.  Pay attention to our veterans, especially today, hold doors, pay for coffee's, make it known that you are greatful and proud of these amazing individuals who deserve your gratitue and pride, everyday but especially today, Veteran's Day 2014.
