The Texas Department of Public Safety has increased the reward in a 1977 cold case out of Winkler County and Kermit.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, the reward is now $6,000 for any information that leads to an arrest in the case of 73-year-old S.A. "Champ" Weaver who was murdered in 1977.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is hoping the increased amount will spark more tips on the 45-year-old case.

on January 4, 1977, Weaver's 1971 Monte Carlo was found on the north shoulder of State Highway 302 about 4 miles west of Kermit with the motor still running.

Weaver had been robbed and shot numerous times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Weaver had been elected Precinct 4 Constable of Winkler County and had last been seen earlier that evening at the Elbow Room, a lounge that he owned. He also owned a waterworks pumping station but it is unknown if owning those two properties was the motive for the shooting or not.

Any information is needed to close this case and find out the reason for Weaver's murder.

The Texas Rangers have also been brought in to help the Winkler County Sheriff's Office with the case and they ask that anyone who has information about the shooting of Weaver to please come forward with any information.

No tip is too small so if you have any information that leads to the arrest or anything to close out this case you are asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). All tips will remain anonymous and you can also submit tips to the Texas Rangers' Cold Case website or by phone at 1-800-346-3243.
