September is the American Library Associations “Library Card Sign Up Month”.  Started in 1987, and coinciding with the beginning of the school year, when librarians across the nation could help families sign up for the cards., The goal is to get the community to sign up for a library card to “empower community members to utilize the resources found in their local library”.

This year, Midland County Public Libraries is partnering with local businesses, all September, in a campaign to encourage “life long literacy and community empowerment”.  “One Card. One Community. A World of Opportunity”, allows residents to sign up, or show their current Midland County library cards, to participating businesses for special discounts.

Partnering Businesses include:

  • Marble Slab Creamery
  • The River Fine Arts
  • Tall City Brewery
  • Popbar Midland
  • Shipley Do-Nuts
  • Nothing Bundt Cakes
  • Wagner Noel Performing Arts Studio
  • Museum of the Southwest
  • Kendra Scott
  • Cpl Ray’s Coffee
  • Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop
  • Mac’s Bar-B-Q

By providing these discounts, during the library card sign up month, they help the library highlight the economic value of a library card. When a MCPL library card holder checks out “one adult book and one children’s book monthly, they save $350 annually”.

Midland County Public Libraries (MCPL) will hold a drawing, for multiple gift cards, will be held to encourage active library card users and promote new users to participate in the September activities. New card holders will automatically be entered into the drawing for a Kindle Fire HD upon request.
