Metallica, GWAR + Mastodon Among Artists to Issue LPs on Pink Vinyl for Charity
Metallica, GWAR and Mastodon are among the 10 artists taking part in the Ten Bands One Cause project, reissuing their albums on limited edition pink vinyl. This is the fourth year for the initiative that has raised over $144,000 for Gilda’s Club NYC, an organization that provides community support for both those diagnosed with cancer and their caretakers. It is named after comedian Gilda Radner, who passed away from cancer at the age of 43 in 1989.
Joining the aforementioned metal acts will be Portugal. The Man, Lord Huron, Dustin Kensrue, Gary Clark Jr, Lucinda Williams, Four Year Strong and Blue October. The releases will be available for purchase at retailers nationwide wherever vinyl is sold, and proceeds will sponsor Gilda’s Club NYC.
Gilda's Club NYC (GCNYC) was founded in 1995 by fellow comedian and actor Gene Wilder in memory of Radner, his wife and original cast member of Saturday Night Live who passed away in 1989 from ovarian cancer. GCNYC's mission is to support, educate and empower cancer patients and their families. Their innovative program is an essential complement to medical care.
"Now in our 22nd year, we reach more than 20,000 people annually through our Clubhouse and offsite hospital partners, and outreach through our website, health fairs, schools, corporate presentations, and inquiry calls," GCNY says in a statement. "A cancer diagnosis can be an extremely isolating experience which triggers many emotions including fear, anger, depression and an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Men, women, teens, and children attend free support groups, educational lectures and workshops at the West Village clubhouse or at select medical centers throughout New York City."
The metal albums available on pink vinyl will be Metallica's Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, GWAR's The Blood of Gods and Mastodon's Emperor of Sand. There's also a Spotify playlist for this year's crop of artists involved which can be listened to here.
