Alarming STD Trends In Midland-Odessa Area Raise Concerns
In Midland-Odessa, there is no shortage of stories of infidelity or instances of promiscuity; after all, many people justify promiscuous behavior and chalk it up to "there's nothing to do".
Despite the reasoning, a growing cause for concern appears to be unfolding before our eyes.
The Permian Basin has fallen victim to some alarming statistics when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases; some of the most alarming statistics in the state.

The Numbers Don't Lie
According to the 2023 Midland County Fact Sheet, youth aged 15–24 accounted for the majority of reported STD cases:
- Chlamydia: 583 cases, with 64% occurring in youth
- Gonorrhea: 77 cases, 27% among youth
- Syphilis: 30 cases, a 131% increase from 2019
What makes these statistics a little difficult to calculate is the notion of the revolving population that is only living and working in the Permian Basin temporarily.
These numbers reflect broader statewide trends. In 2023, Texas reported:
- 149,787 cases of chlamydia
- 53,699 cases of gonorrhea
- 4,561 cases of primary and secondary syphilis
- 930 cases of congenital syphilis
Texas ranks 20th nationally for chlamydia and 19th for gonorrhea, underscoring the urgency of local intervention in Midland-Odessa.

- Expanded clinic hours and mobile health units for underserved neighborhoods

Conclusion
Granted, the topic of discussion regarding sexually transmitted diseases may be taboo for some locals. However, in my opinion, this way of thinking has greatly contributed to why we are in the position that we find ourselves.
This taboo needs to end if we are going to be proactive towards bringing these numbers down.
