Ewan McGregor Could See Himself Doing Two Obi-Wan Movies
When an actor expresses interest in returning to an iconic role, I always wonder whether the actor needs the franchise more than the franchise needs the actor. Ron Perlman, for example, has spent years talking up his interest in another Hellboy movie, despite it being fairly obvious that the studio had no real interest in getting that project off the ground. So when Ewan McGregor told reporters last year that he would come back for an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie, I wondered: does this make sense for everyone involved? Or was McGregor just doing the Hollywood equivalent of jumping on a trending hashtag?
One way or the other, it seems that McGregor’s interest in a return to the Star Wars universe has not died down. In a conversation with Empire earlier this week, McGregor reaffirmed his interest in doing not one, but two standalone Obi-Wan movies.
It would be fun to film that story now I’m older. I’d be the right age. I’m 45, Alec Guinness was what, 60? I could do two of them.
McGregor also shared his opinion that the current state of the Star Wars universe should allow filmmakers to “explore different genres under the Star Wars banner,” opening the door to any number of possible stories with the original Jedi Knight. George Lucas always lifted heavily from Japanese cinema for his original trilogy, so what about an Obi-Wan movie that closely follows the conventions of a western? An aging “gunslinger” who stumbles into the wrong town (or planet) at the wrong time and has to save a group of people from a local tyrant. McGregor’s at the right point in his career — a little older, a little weaker at the box office — to make the Star Wars equivalent of a Spaghetti Western. I would jump on that with both feet if I were Disney.
As McGregor points out, Obi-Wan is the rare iconic role where a 45-year-old actor can wait a decade or two and still be considered a front-runner for the part. Here’s hoping that Disney at least sits down and discusses the possibility with McGregor at some point.
