Not that anyone would deliberately do this, but having unattractive friends can be a real benefit.  While most of us would NOT go out and choose unattractive friends just to look better, if you're seeking attention there is something to it.  Studies show people who surround themselves with less attractive people do get more attention.  Even more effective is the Hugh Heffner approach, surround yourself with attractive people of the opposite sex and you can't help but stand out.  This behavior isn't as shallow as is seems.  It's actually a part of nature.  In order to survive, species need to reproduce and that's where competition comes into play.  For example, the more beautiful and fragrant flowers attract more bees and an outstanding male peacock's display is bound to attract more chicks if his buddies he hangs out with are just fair-feathered friends.
