‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ Might Get a 3D Release

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

James Cameron has applied his fondness for 3D technology to the world of ‘Avatar,’ and he even gave his blockbuster ‘Titanic’ a 3D conversion for a theatrical rerelease. But what about some of his other films — specifically, the ‘Terminator’ movies? According to Cameron, a 3D version of ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ is a possibility.

Over the weekend, Cameron spoke at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival (via Slashfilm) and was asked about the possibility of converting and rereleasing his ‘Terminator’ films in 3D. Although he said the lower quality of the first ‘Terminator’ film wouldn’t lend itself well to conversion, and the cost of converting alone would be higher than the cost of actually making the film, Cameron did have this to offer regarding ‘Terminator 2′:

But Terminator 2 is a more polished film and, I think, it has a kind of timeless appeal. If there was someone who was interested in doing that, and we could make a good case for the business model like, perhaps let’s say, it’s never been on screens in China which in the next few years is about to become the biggest market for films worldwide. That alone might justify the cost of a conversion which might be 6 or 7 million dollars. And then a 3D re-release might attract some eyeballs in North American and Europe and then the Chinese release, which would be the first release on the big screen, might pay for it.

I’m just using that as an example. I’m just saying we’re not ruling it out. We’re looking at it.

Some of the effects in ‘Terminator 2′ would be interesting to behold in 3D, but what do you guys think? Would you want to see a 3D version of this sci-fi action classic, or should Cameron just leave well enough alone?
