After 17 years of service with Sum 41, drummer, original member and comic cutup Steve Jocz (aka Stevo32) has left the band.

Jocz formed Sum 41 with frontman Deryck Whibley in 1996, originally acting as a NOFX cover band called Kaspir. The band performed their first show under the name Supernova on Sept. 28, 1996, which happened to be the 41st day of summer, providing inspiration for the Sum 41 name. Jocz sold millions of records with Sum 41 via the act’s five full-length albums, four EPs and three live releases.

Jocz announced his leave from Sum 41 via the band’s official Facebook page, along with his personal Twitter account:

I’m sorry to announce that I’ve decided to leave Sum 41.

Touring with the band has been an amazing experience that has taken us far beyond our old practice space in my parent’s basement to countless countries around the world. I’ve had the opportunity to see and experience so much and for that I am truly grateful.

I just want to thank all of our fans for making the last 17 years possible. I had a blast.

Thanks again,

Stevo.

The news of the drummer’s departure comes less than a month after Sum 41 confirmed that their next full-length album would see a 2013 release.

Sum 41 recently blasted through North America for a 10th anniversary tour of the band’s second full-length album, ‘Does This Look Infected?,’ performing each song from the record at almost every stop.

Thanks for all the great years and monstrous belly-laughs, Steve. To celebrate the career of one of pop-punk’s greatest performers, check out Stevo32 on vocals busting out the classic Sum 41 concert closer, ‘Pain for Pleasure.’
