Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has died at the age of 46. According to the New York Times, Hoffman was found in his New York apartment Sunday morning (Feb. 2) of an apparent drug overdose.

The law enforcement officer told the paper that they discovered Hoffman at 11:30AM after being contacted by a friend who had not been able to reach the actor. Investigators found a syringe in his arm and an envelope containing what is believed to have been heroin. Hoffman had remained sober for 23 years before undergoing treatment for drug addiction last year.

According to Screencrush, his family released a statement, saying:

We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.

Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the 2005 film ‘Capote’ and his credits include such movies as ‘Doubt,’ ‘The Master,’ ‘Charlie Wilson’s War,’ ‘Almost Famous,’ ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley,’ ‘Flawless’ and ‘The Big Lebowski.’

The actor’s passing has resulted in a number of rockers taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on his death, his career and sobriety in general. Disturbed‘s David Draiman, Motley Crue‘s Nikki Sixx, Jane’s Addiction‘s Dave Navarro and Sebastian Bach were among the initial artists sharing their thoughts. Read their tweets below:

Hoffman was recently at the Sundance Film Festival promoting the new movie ‘A Most Wanted Man’ and was in production on the next two ‘Hunger Games’ films.
