Kyng Drummer Pepe Clarke Magana Discusses ‘Burn the Serum’ Album, Playing Live + More
Kyng have been laying the groundwork in recent years and with their ‘Burn the Serum’ album, they’re playing to some of the biggest crowds of their career. The band was a favorite during the spring rock festival season and ‘Loudwire Nights’ host Full Metal Jackie caught up with Kyng drummer Pepe Clarke Magana at the Welcome to Rockville Festival. Check out her chat below:
Definitely a bit of musical diversity here at Welcome to Rockville. Does that excite you as a musician or a fan to have so many different bands on a bill like this?
Definitely, love the fact that there’s so many different genres being represented. I don’t think it’s as fun to go to a festival where everybody sounds exactly the same so this is really cool. There’s some rock, there’s some metal, there’s some goth stuff, there’s a little bit of everything.
You just did your last record with Jim [Rota] from Fireball Ministry, how was that?
Yes! Jim was amazing, it was great to work with him. He became a really good friend. I like to think of him kind of as a fourth member of the band. In the sense that his input was key into the sound of this new album and all his knowledge and his ear he was really good at taking our sound, not changing it, but making it sound more focused and a little bit more, I don’t know … I feel like it’s a heavier album because of it. Like he trimmed the fat off of the meat you know what I mean? Yeah we’re really happy with the result.
There’s so much talent at a festival that you can’t help but bring your “A” game. What does Kyng do best that people get a chance to see during your set?
Well, we pride ourselves in our live show we feel like we give a lot of energy we’re a three piece we do not run tracks. Everything that you’re hearing is something that we’re playing. We’re really proud of that we have a really good singer and our bass player does great back up vocals. It’s full on assault that we bring.
It seems like you’re having a great time out there.
It’s a blast! Yeah, it’s always great to play live.
Something we’ve been asking bands all weekend long, what are some tips you’d give for surviving a rock festival?
So you have to stay hydrated. It’s the most important. It’s hot as balls out there and it’s really bad so stay hydrated. Look for shade. Enjoy yourself! I don’t know what other tips to give people.
You can give tips on what NOT to do.
I guess don’t get really, really, really drunk before the bands you want to see come onstage. ‘Cause you see people get carried out that they weren’t ready to leave yet. Don’t get too crazy I guess in the pit. Don’t break a leg before or during your bands set. (Laughs) People do that. Don’t do it!
Don’t break a limb, that’s a new one. Pick up the latest record and see the band on tour, I’m sure you’ll be doing an endless amount of touring.
We’re gonna be on tour for at least another year and a half.
See the band live, thanks!
Thank you Jackie I really appreciate it.
