FOX’s ‘Gotham’ Adds ‘Dexter’ Star David Zayas as DC’s Sal Maroni
FOX’s forthcoming Batman prequel drama ‘Gotham‘ came to Comic-Con 2014 with a relatively small showing beyond the world premiere of its pilot, but now the fabled city seems to be picking up steam. Famous for catching killers on ‘Dexter,’ David Zayas has switched sides of the law to become infamous DC mobster villain Sal Maroni when ‘Gotham’ officially debuts this fall.
Via Deadline, Zayas’ recurring role of Sal Maroni will play against that of John Doman’s Carmine Falcone, the shadowy unidentified figure from early trailers. It isn’t entirely clear if ‘Gotham’ itself intends to go this route, but the article also makes mention of Maroni’s comic history as the man responsible for disfiguring District Attorney Harvey Dent, transforming him into Two-Face. Producers have implied we’d eventually meet Dent as someone likely older than Bruce Wayne, though it would seem a little early for any major Bat-mythology just yet.
The new series will explore “the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the villains that made Gotham famous,” with its pilot focusing on Gordon’s investigation of the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The pilot was written and executive produced by Bruno Heller (‘The Mentalist’), along with Warner Bros. Television, and directed by ‘Judge Dredd’ helmer Danny Cannon.
FOX’s ‘Gotham’ also stars Robin Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Gordon’s partner Detective Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, Victoria Cartagena and Andrew Stewart-Jones as Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen, ‘Burn Notice‘ star Zabryna Guevara as Gordon’s GCPD boss Captain Essen, and Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean.
Sal Maroni (played by Eric Robert in ‘The Dark Knight’) marks yet another major ‘Gotham’ name to add to the likes of a show already teasing the Joker, Mr. Freeze, Hugo Strange and Arkham Asylum waiting in the wings, but what say you? Does David Zayas seem like a good fit for FOX’s ‘Gotham’? Watch the new Comic-Con trailer below, and give us your thoughts in the comments!
