Hand sanitizer was invented all the way back in the '60s and it's been available in stores since 1988. So you've probably used it more than a few times. But did you know you're probably using it wrong?

Let me guess how you use hand sanitizer. You put a dollop of hand sanitizer in one hand and then you rub your hands together for a few seconds. Simple, right?

Wrong. Here's how you're supposed to use hand sanitizer. To kill the bacteria on your hands you need rub them for 15 seconds until they are dry. If you think that's long, the World Health Organization says to rub them together for 20 to 30 seconds.

Don't think that 15 seconds is a long time? It might not be, but it feels like it. Go ahead. Count to 15 slowly. I'll wait.

Feels like forever doesn't it? Well, if you want that hand sanitizer to actually do its job, you're going to have to wait that full 15 seconds.
