The Rio Olympics officially being this Friday, so it's time to test your Olympics knowledge with this edition of Yes or BS.

  1. After the Berlin Olympics, there was 12 years without an Olympics.
    1. Yes - The Berlin Olympics was presided over by Adolf Hitler and was the first time there was an Olympic torch. Hitler did want to ban Jews from being able to compete, but there would have been a massive boycott form the other countries. There was 12 years without an Olympics because of World War II.
  2. The original Olympics were in Greece, and the word "gymnasium" comes from the Greek root "gymnos" meaning naked.
    1. Yes - All the athletes performed naked in the ancient Olympics and "gymnasium" translates to "school to naked exercise."
  3. At the first modern Olympics in 1896, they gave silver medals to the winners, second place got bronze.
    1. Yes - Gold replaced silver in 1904. Still better than the ancient Olympics. The winner for an olive branch to wear on their head. Second and third got nothing.
  4. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, American beach volleyball played Misty May-Treanor persuaded President George W. Bush to smack her butt, the way teammates do after a point.
    1. BS - She asked and he played along. But instead of actually smacking her rear end, he told her to turn around and swatted her lower back with the back of his hand.
  5. Motor-boating and dueling pistols used to be Olympic sports.
    1. Yes - Both were Olympic events, and the duel was with a target.
