According to a new survey, we don't pay as close attention to fire hazards during the holidays.

PR Newswire has the results of the survey, and found the four main reasons for starting fires during the holidays:

  1. We light more candles.  34% of people admit they sometimes leave candles burning when they're not in the room.  Which is especially dangerous if you have kids.
  2. We cook more.  44% of us have left something cooking on the stove or in the oven during the holidays, without keeping an eye on it.
  3. We build more fires.  17% of us have left a fire burning in the fireplace while no one was watching it.  And 44% of people with gas fireplaces haven't had them inspected in the last three years.
  4. We plug more stuff in.  43% of people admit they sometimes plug way too many things into one outlet during the holidays, which can cause an electrical fire.

Also, make sure all of your smoke alarms are working.

53% of the people in the survey said they haven't checked their smoke alarms recently, and 44% said they don't own a fire extinguisher.
