With the recent rains, the threat of a mosquito flare-up is pretty much already here in some areas and expected in others.

According to the Odessa American, the increase of rain in the past several weeks has allowed the mosquito population to flourish.

Even though areas of standing water are the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, city officials say there are no plans for city or county wide spraying.

City officials said that spraying does not do as good a job as most people think and that instead of spraying, the city is opting for trimming up vegetation and using larvicide on standing water to eliminate the increase of future mosquitoes.

A spokesperson for the city said they will take care of any areas of standing water or overgrown weeds but the public has to report these areas to the proper city departments.
