Marvel’s ’Werewolf’ By Night’ Finds a Director
You often see screenwriters, editors, producers, and even visual effects artists try their hand at directing. But it’s pretty rare for a composer to graduate to full-blown filmmaking; I’m struggling to think of any examples at all, unless you count someone like John Carpenter, who often provided the scores to his movies, like Halloween or Escape From New York.
But according to TheWrap, one of the biggest composers in Hollywood is about to get his hot at helming his own project. Michael Giacchino, whose credits include Pixar’s Up, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, Jurassic World, Star Wars: Rogue One, and the recent Spider-Man trilogy, will direct Marvel’s upcoming Halloween special for Disney+ which is reportedly based on the horror comic Werewolf By Night. Gael Garcia Bernal has been cast in the show’s lead role.
.You can currently hear Giacchino’s music echoing through movie theaters around the country in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
It’s not clear what version of Werewolf By Night will appear in the special, as Marvel has published several series with that title through the years, each with different lead characters. The most famous Werewolf By Night is a guy named Jack Russell, who was created in by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog in the early 1970s when horror characters like Dracula, Man-Thing, and Frankenstein became top-sellers in the comics industry. That run of Werewolf by Night lasted for 43 issues, and included the very first appearance of the character Moon Knight, who gets his own Disney+ series later this month.
The Werewolf By Night special is expected around Halloween on Disney+.
