Flood Cars Are a Growing Problem in West Texas
With the recent heavy rains in Texas, particularly in Midland-Odessa last week, we experienced our share of flooding in the area. Despite usually being known as a relatively dry region, we are constantly plagued by flooding when rain does find its way into the Permian Basin.

Flooded Vehicles, A Growing Problem
When a vehicle gets trapped in high water and essentially gets flooded, this can cause all kinds of problems. Especially for people who are unknowingly purchasing them. A previously flooded vehicle entering the used car market is not uncommon and is quickly becoming a growing problem in Midland-Odessa.
Possible Concerns or Issues
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, a flooded vehicle that is fixed cosmetically and is attempted to be resold can have all kinds of hidden issues. The electrical system may have issues due to moisture entering the system. This can cause a wide variety of problems, such as electrical aspects not working properly or lights on the dashboard, such as a check engine light.
If water has entered the exhaust, block, or cylinders, it can cause internal rust that warps the rods, which can result in a less efficient engine.. This can affect performance and the longevity of the engine overall.

Avoiding Purchasing A Previously Flooded Vehicle
There are measures you can take to avoid purchasing a previously flooded vehicle. Experts recommend using the NICB's WINCheck web page. You can also use similar services, such as the more popular Carfax. You can also look for tell-tale signs such as musty odors, rust under the seats, new carpet in an older vehicle, or moisture in the headlights.
