Asking AI What It Thinks About The People From Midland-Odessa, Texas
Midland, Texas -- In 2025, there is one thing that you absolutely cannot deny: Artificial Intelligence is making wonderful (and sometimes scary) strides in many different areas of life. It has become so normalized in society that we often overlook the fact that we are even using it.

Modern AI in 2025 differs from older, more traditional artificial intelligence. For example, we've seen an influx of generative AI that can write articles or blogs, create visually stunning graphics, and now even generate video all based off a prompt.
Speaking of generative artificial intelligence, I wanted to run a simple yet amusing social experiment. I wanted to ask AI to generate images of what it thinks locals from Midland-Odessa look like. Before I generated the images, I took into consideration that there may be a reinforcement of typical stereotypes that comes along with generating the people of the region. That was not my intention. I simply wanted to see what the AI would spit out if given the prompt of...
Show me the average man from Midland-Odessa
To be honest, this is similar to what I was expecting the AI to create. What we have here looks like as an oilfield worker. Dressed in overalls, work boots, and a hard hat. This implies that the AI feels a generalization of men in the area all look like this and work in the oil field.
Show me the average woman from Midland-Odessa
I admit, I laughed when the AI rendered this image. I don't know whether it was the face/neck tattoos or the cancer stick in her mouth that did it to me. This looks like a Latina covered with a large amount of tattoos as she snarls at the camera.
Conclusion
I knew beforehand that the AI was going to generate these images based on stereotypes. One important thing to note is that the AI did not mean any kind of disrespect. It simply searched the Internet for context to base the image on, nothing more.
