Officer Levin served the community until 1978, nearly 48 years ago. It was an early morning in August when Levin was conducting an investigation involving a suspicious person who may have been connected to an arson investigation. When he made contact with the individual near North Amy and E. Valley Road, Levin stepped out of his patrol car. Unfortunately, the suspect fired a .25-caliber pistol into the officer’s temple. The brave officer was found dead moments later, lying near a curve beside his service weapon.

A manhunt immediately followed. Justice was eventually served when the suspect was convicted of capital murder and executed in 1984. On August 11, 1978, officials across the state paid tribute to their fallen fellow officer. He was laid to rest in a flag-draped coffin with full police honors. This is a legacy the city has not forgotten. Thanks to Mayor Blomquist efforts to honor the past, the history and sacrifice of Officer Levin will continue to be remembered for generations to come.
