Governor Greg Abbott Orders The Texas National Guard to Protest Sites
Governor Greg Abbott announced this week that the Texas National Guard would be deploying under his orders across the state. The move is in anticipation of protests against President Trump's immigration policy.
The Governor told members of the press that that peaceful protesting is legal, but harming others or property will lead to arrests.
No Kings Protests Planned for Saturday
According to the Texas Tribune, the Governor has already sent the National Guard to San Antonio, but the police chief there had no other details. The leftist group Indivisible has organized protests across Texas and the nation for Saturday. The protests have been called the "No Kings" protest and there are protest being planned in over two dozen Texas cities including Houston, Austin, Dallas, Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene, Wichita Falls, and San Antonio.
Texas Won't Become Los Angeles
Texas Governor Greg Abbott doesn't want to see any Texas city descend into the chaos and violence that we have seen in Los Angeles in recent days. Other cities in America including Seattle and New York City have also see violent protests in recent days. Texas wants to avoid that according to Andrew Mahaleris, who confirmed to the Texas Tribune that the National Guard are on standby in areas where large demonstrations may happen.
“Peaceful protests are part of the fabric of our nation, but Texas will not tolerate the lawlessness we have seen in Los Angeles,” Mahaleris said in a statement. “Anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be swiftly held accountable to the full extent of the law.”
Democrats have accused President Trump of inflaming tensions by sending the National Guard to the protests in Los Angeles.
