New Restaurant Opening in Tyler This Summer
(Tyler, Texas) Longview, Henderson, and Athens know all about Tia Juanita's Fish Camp, as do Lufkin, Waco, Beaumont, and many other Texas cities. No, it’s not a camp for freshmen heading to school, it's a restaurant with a special kind of cuisine dubbed 'mexicajun'.
What Is ‘Mexicajun’ Cuisine?
If you're looking for a taste of Mexican food spiced up with Cajun cuisine, then you might find yourself ready to be seated with a big menu at the whimsical wood-paneled eatery known as Tia Juanita's Fish Camp. (Tia Juanita Fish Camp)
While visiting the Galveston area a few years ago, I recall seeing this restaurant's name while passing through Crystal Beach. Unfortunately, I did not get to stop and eat, nor was I aware that it had multiple locations. The southeast Texas chain is expanding and now has eyes set on opening a location in Tyler.

What’s on the Menu at Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp
As the Tyler restaurant scene continues to grow, Tia Juanita's Fish Camp is joining the party and will be serving up a combination of spicy Cajun cuisine with a Mexican flair. Taking a look at their Henderson location menu, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your taste buds. From traditional starters like chips and salsa, you can also start your meal off with crawfish queso, boudin balls, alligator bites, crab cakes, and more.
If you don't get filled up on the appetizers, you can choose from different types of gumbo and oysters. Tia Juanita's Fish Camp marries the Cajun and Mexican flair in its fajitas, quesadillas, nachos, and tacos. If you're looking for a 'sandwich' type of meal, the po'boy will do just fine. It can be filled with fish, oysters, beef, boudin, or shrimp.
This menu alone is enough to make you hungry. The extensive menu, of course, has my favorite course, dessert! I'll go for the sopapilla cheesecake or strawberry shortcake for sure.

Where the New Tyler Location Will Be
Tia Juanita's Fish Camp in Tyler is set to begin renovations on the 7,800-square-foot spot formerly occupied by Razzoo's Cajun Cafe on South Broadway, according to Coming Soon Texas. Construction is scheduled to begin on May 1 with an anticipated opening date of August 1.
Why East Texans Already Love This Restaurant
I guess I've been missing out on one fantastic restaurant. Apparently, Tyler has been making the drive to Henderson, Athens, and Longview for a while to satisfy their seafood-cajun-Mexican appetites. Many comments on the social media post about the restaurant opening have been raves on how great the Henderson location is. Some were wondering if it was an April Fool's prank. Coming Soon Texas squashed that by posting a screenshot with the details of the project from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
