(Mix 93-1)  One of the best and easiest things you can do for your health is to keep moving. Motion helps your joints, helps digest your food, helps your blood flow properly, and helps you burn some of those calories you consumed at lunch and dinner.

Why Walking Is Great for Your Health

When you get out and walk, not only are you improving your health, but you're getting some fresh air, and you're hopefully enjoying nature and being observant of the things around you.

Not too long ago, I went for a walk along the southern portion of Legacy Trails with a good friend of mine here at the radio station.

Exploring Legacy Trails in Tyler

We hit the trail one afternoon, walked about a mile and a half all along just talking and catching up the whole way, and then walked the mile and a half back to Three Lakes, where we started.

If you ever go walking on this trail, see if you can spot the old railroad tracks and just think about all the trains that rolled down the tracks back in the day.

It's great that Tyler has a trail system like this that is good not only for walking, but biking. There are plans to eventually link this trail system up with the existing Rose Rudman Recreational Trail and expand it north toward downtown Tyler and over to Frankston Highway.

Top Trail Suggestions from East Texans

A while back, I ran across this question on a social media platform asking for trail recommendations around Tyler.

While East Texas can't give this person the elevation, scenery, climate, and trail difficulty that they're accustomed to while on a hike in Colorado, East Texans were eager to give this person some great suggestions for walking trails around the area and some nature hiking trails in state parks.

What to Bring Before You Hit the Trail

Now, before you head out on any walk or hike, whether it is in the city or a state park setting, it's a good idea to check the current trail conditions, park hours, and any permits or fees that may be required.

Also, be prepared with appropriate gear, water, and weather-appropriate clothing for the terrain you'll be hiking in. Be sure to take your cell phone just in case you need to make an emergency call.
