Lufkin City Council Approves Jail Demolition

According to KTRE, the change was made due to an increase in shops selling vape products and students in schools having access to them.
Lufkin City Council Approves Bid For Demolition Of Jail
The previous Angelina County Jail, next to the current Angelina County Courthouse, has finally been scheduled for demolition. I don't know who was opposing this in the past, but the reasoning of courthouse storage has apparently become a non-issue, and they are moving forward with the building being torn down.
The City Council approved a bid for the destruction of the old jail that opened in 1984 downtown. It was replaced in 2003 with the current Angelina County Sheriff's Office modern facility that can house a maximum of 279 inmates.

According to angelinajailroster.org, the original jail was built in 1885. It was a brick building that only held 50 inmates. It was used for over 100 years and was known as the "Old Jail". It closed in 1993 due to overcrowding and security concerns.

The jail they are going to tear down is the one that replaced that first jail in 1993, and was in operation for about 10 years, until the current jail was built. The jail next to the courthouse will now become much-needed parking.
