According to the New York Film Academy, drive-in movie theaters are true American originals. The first opened in New Jersey in the 1930s, allowing families to bring their children along to the film-going experience, even if they were a little rowdy.

Drive-ins saw a huge rise in popularity in the 50s and 60s, and many of the ones that still exist hold on to that classic vibe. Lubbock's Stars & Stripes Drive-In is no exception.

Lubbock's Homegrown Drive-In Movie Experience Is Pure Nostalgia

Stars & Stripes Drive-In (5101 Clovis Rd) is the whole package. It has three big outdoor screens- each with a curated double feature to enjoy each open night.

The 50s Cafe is truly remarkable and well worth the trip inside to stock up on eats and treats. Of course, there's your standard candy, sodas, and popcorn, but they also have unique and delicious items you'll want to try, too.

There are burgers, pizza, box dinners and more, which are all fresh in delicious. However, my favorites are the Icees, the corn fritters with honey (messy but incredible- get napkins), and the king of the Stars and Stripes snacks- the Chihuahua Sandwich.

What Is A Chihuahua Sandwich In Lubbock?

Good question, and it does require a little explaining. I actually love to see a person's face when describing this very unique food item. It is then topped with onions, jalapeno, and... cabbage.

It sounds totally weird, and much like the corn fritters, it's a bit messy, but I can not over exaggerate how delicious and craveable these things are. They should be on some sort of official Lubbock bingo card alongside Chiltons, Down N' Dirty Tortellini, and Big E's barbeque.

Lubbock Orginal Stars & Stripes Is Up For Best Drive-In In the U.S.- For Another Location

Sad to say it in't the Lubbock location up for best Drive-In in the U.S., but we can be proud that the folks who started their drive-in business here in Lubbock could receive the accolade for their New Braunfels location. I think the city itself has a little something to do with it- we don't have a river to float in before the films.

When you see the pictures of the New Braunfels location, you can see that its quite similar to ours:

We can support our Lubbock family (and share in their glory!) by voting in the USA Today poll to get them in the Top 10. Top 20 is a big deal, but we can move the needle even further.

Good Luck to Stars & Stripes- a true Lubbock original!
