For those planning to get their children vaccinated, health officials say to talk to your kids about it first.

According to NewsWest 9, as we wait for approval from the CDC and FDA for the COVID-19 vaccine, parents are encouraged to talk to their children before they get it.

“Try to connect it to what they already know which is that they've had vaccines before and they’ve gotten through it," said Jody Baumstein, a Therapist with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Strong4Life.

That is just what Amanda Provence did with her 11-year-old son.

“He understands it a lot," said Provence, “on a personal level, he is very scared. Anytime he gets a cough, he is like 'do I need to go to a doctor'? 'Am I okay?'"

Having those conversations with your kids could ease their mind.

"I don’t want that for him. I want him to have peace of mind about the vaccination," said Provence.

Talking to your kids also helps them understand in easy-to-understand terms.

"You can talk to them about how they might feel some pressure as the vaccine goes into their arm helping to describe it by keeping it as simple and straightforward as possible," said Jody Baumstein.

Parents should also make sure they tell their kids why it's good for them to get vaccinated.

“Reminding them that this is a way that we can keep themselves and we can keep other people safe,” said Baumstein.

Just try your best at explaining the vaccine to kids, you don't have to have all the answers, but let them know being scared is alright and normal.
