Did You Know There’s A Holy City Under Greenbelt Lake?
The Texas panhandle was a rough and rowdy place in its early days. Gamblers, outlaws, ladies of the night, and legendary lawmen all called this place home. One town wanted to be different.
Saint's Roost was a "holy" town, that wound up underwater.

Saint's Roost - The Original Clarendon, TX
Saint's Roost was a term of endearment given to the town of Clarendon when it was first settled. Clarendon was the idea of a Methodist minister, who thought that a town should exist in the Texas panhandle that wasn't consumed with debauchery.
With the help of some backers, that Methodist minister got his dream town in the Texas panhandle. That's basically how Clarendon came to be.
No Bars, No Gambling, No Dancing Girls, No Fun
If you enjoyed church, then Clarendon was plenty of fun. Otherwise, it was a pretty dull place. There were no bars to speak of. The town looked down on gambling and other illicit activities.
Legends say that there were seven Methodist preachers living in that tiny town at one point.
This is why a lot of people in the area lovingly referred to it as Saint's Roost. It had a holy reputation.
The Holy City's Final Resting Place? Bottom Of A Lake.
When the Greenbelt Reservoir was built, Saint's Roost found its final resting place. It was flooded and somewhat forgotten.
The town was moved long before that though thanks to the railroad. The people in town decided to move to where the business was. That was around 1887.
Saint's Roost would meet its watery end in 1968.
