December 2016 New Music Releases
Our list of of December 2016 new music releases leans heavily on reissues, though there are a couple of notable new classic-rock albums set to arrive before the industry goes quiet for the holidays.
The Rolling Stones' long-rumored blues project features updates of songs originally recorded by Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf – as well as a guest appearance by Eric Clapton, who plays on "Everybody Knows About My Good Thing" and "I Can't Quit You Baby."
Neil Young's mostly acoustic 38th solo record, titled Peace Trail, continues the recent focus on environmental issues found on Earth and The Monsanto Years. An advance single, "Indian Givers,” dealt with a controversy that finds the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe fighting against the construction of an oil pipeline near their reservation.
Rush are set to issue a 40th anniversary edition of 1976's 2112, complete with two CDs and a DVD featuring a live show recorded at Passaic, N.J.'s Capitol Theatre from the year of the album's debut. The Band's 40th anniversary collectors edition of The Last Waltz includes, among other things, the never-before-seen shooting script by director Martin Scorsese.
London Fog 1966 collects previously unreleased live performances from early in the Doors' career. A quirk in the Bob Dylan catalog will also be resolved. Back in 1998, a volume in Dylan’s Bootleg Series included a show misidentified as being from Royal Albert Hall, which was actually recorded at the Manchester Free Trade Hall. The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert arrives this month as a two-disc CD release.
