Dave Grohl Shares Influence of ‘Austin City Limits’ in ‘A Song for You’ Outtakes
Dave Grohl knows a thing or two about music documentaries, having overseen the creation of Sound City and chronicling the recording of the band's Sonic Highways album. But for A Song for You, Grohl is one of the subjects discussing his love for the long-running PBS series, Austin City Limits.
Two outtakes from the film featuring Grohl have surfaced as a crowdfunding campaign is underway to help complete and distribute A Song for You to a wider audience. In the video above, the Foo Fighters leader discusses growing up in Virginia and watching Austin City Limits and how it varied from the typical music performance on TV.
He explained, "It was more than just one song at the end of The Tonight Show ... It was an ensemble performance that went on for more than like six minutes, and I really liked that a lot. It was that kind of thing that inspired me to want to play with other people." In the second outtake, featured at the bottom of this post, Grohl says that playing Austin City Limits was a sign that you've done something right in your life. "Walking on that stage — you're invited to come here — and you stand on the stage and there is some validation," says the vocalist.
Grohl is just one of the film's subjects, with artists ranging from Beck to Willie Nelson sharing their love for the long-running series. The film was directed by Keith Maitland and premiered earlier this year at the South By Southwest Film Festival.
But Maitland has bigger plans for the film and he's launched the Kickstarter campaign to help pay for some of the music rights and archival footage in the movie and to assist in giving the movie a wider release. At press time, the campaign had raised just shy of $43,000, with the goal to reach $125,00. There are 14 days left on the campaign and if you wish to contribute, you can do so here.
In all, Maitland reveals that over 70 songs are part of the 96-minute documentary. Find out more about the movie here.
