Former Black Flag Bassist Kira Roessler Wins Oscar for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’

Kira Roessler, who served as the bassist for Black Flag in the mid-‘80s, won an Oscar for her involvement in Mad Max: Fury Road last night (Feb. 28).

The movie won six Oscars in all, one of which recognized the film for Best Sound Editing. Roessler served on the Mad Max sound team helmed by Mark Mangini as supervising dialogue editor. This isn’t Roessler’s first award for her work as a dialogue editor, either. She earned an Emmy for her work on an episode of the John Adams mini-series in 2008 (which means she’s halfway to the prestigious EGOT). She’s also credited in films like 2002's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and 2009's The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Roessler appeared in Black Flag’s lineup between 1983 and 1985. She replaced founding member Chuck Dukowski and contributed to 1984’s Family Man and Slip It In and 1985’s Loose Nut and the band’s pre-breakup album In My Head. After Black Flag, Roessler formed a new band DOS with her ex-husband and Minutemen’s Mike Watt. She also contributed to Minutemen’s final album 3-Way Tie in 1985.
