Woman Comes Forward to Reveal She Is the Voice of Siri

Maybe you should ask Siri for her real name.

A woman named Susan Bennett has come forward to say she is the voice of the famed Apple assistant millions of Americans turn to on their phones.

The Atlanta woman may claim to be the voice, but Apple remains mum on the matter. She’s decided to come forward now that iOS7 means there will be new Siri voices. She also chose now as the time for her coming-out party because of a recent video which led some people to speculate on the true identity of Siri.

I really had to weigh the importance of it for me personally. I wasn’t sure that I wanted that notoriety, and I also wasn’t sure where I stood legally. And so, consequently, I was very conservative about it for a long time. And then this Verge video came out … And it seemed like everyone was clamoring to find out who the real voice behind Siri is, and so I thought, well, you know, what the heck? This is the time.”

Bennett first noticed her voice matched Siri’s in October 2011 when Apple released the iPhone4S – the first phone in which Siri appeared. She had done voicework for a software company several years before for a company, Nuance, that is widely believed to be the one that created the voice technology to make Siri work.

Neither Nuance nor Apple would comment on Siri’s identity.

Bennett, who does not have to adhere to any gag order, has not received any verification from Apple, so her lawyer says, “I’ve engaged in substantial negotiations — multiple, months-long negotiations — with parties along the economic food chain, so to speak, that involved her rendering services as the voice of Siri.”
