Did anyone else’s taxes go up unexpectedly this year? It’s normal for your taxes to go up, in fact everyone’s will go up a little every year however, mine went up so much that my mortgage is now $300 more a month. Turns out I somehow forgot or simply neglected to turn in the paperwork to declare my house homesteaded. You might think that would be an easy fix right? Folks, nothing for me is easy, if it can happen, it will happen… TO ME!

The lady at the tax office said that in order to process my request she would need a copy of a driver’s license with the same name on it as the name on my house. No big deal, I’ve been meaning to go get the last night on my driver’s license changed I’ve just been putting it off. You see when I got divorced back in September 2016 and then bought my house that same month, actually pretty much that same day, I put everything in my maiden name. I never changed the name on my social security when I go married 8 or 9 years ago and I was glad I didn’t because I figured it would’ve made switching things back to my maiden name way easier. It didn’t.
Apparently if you want your name to go back to what it was before you got married that verbiage has to specifically be in your divorce decree, otherwise you have to do what I’m in the process of doing now. You have to get paperwork from the district court your divorce was in, then go get your fingerprints done and take everything to the court to make the request in front of a judge who then has to approve your request to change your name back to what it was before you got married, or whatever it is that you want it to be I suppose. Then you wait for all that to go through and when it does you take the judgement you get from the court to the DMV and wait precisely one billion years to get your name changed on your driver’s license so that you can then send a copy of that driver’s license to the tax office so that the name on your property taxes matches the name on your license.
The point is I had to go get my fingerprints done and it was really cool. The don’t do the whole ink thing anymore, well they will if you ask them to but mostly it’s done on a machine with fingerprint imaging and it’s really cool.
