System of a Down are about to add another award to their mantle, but this one will definitely hit home for the group. The band will receive the 2015 Parajanov-Vartanov Institute Award for their virtuous commitment to justice exemplified by the band's 'Wake Up the Souls' tour.

While it sounds like a cool name for a tour, 'Wake Up the Souls' was much more than just about music. System of a Down have long staged 'Souls' performances in commemoration of their attempts to bring attention to the Armenian genocide in hopes that it is finally officially recognized by governments around the world. This time out the band took their show to many of the European capitols that were around for World War I. During their April run, which commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the band played their first ever performance in Armenia at Yerevan's Republic Square in a show that was webcast around the world.

“The Genocide and our quest for justice has now been engrained into the DNA of Armenian culture and has become the most prevalent characteristic and bond among our people," said Serj Tankian in a chat earlier this year. "No culture wants to be victimized forever. But does that have to take over our cultural treasures? Isn’t what we’re doing with System Of A Down the perfect marriage of that? To present our cultural assets while fighting for justice. One without the other is an irreversible loss I think.”

The Parajanov-Vartanov Institute, like System of a Down, has dedicated their lives to the righteous fight against the injustices of totalitarian regimes. The two men whose names grace the institute were two of the most important figures in cinema, literature and art.

The ceremony honoring System of a Down will take place at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood on Oct. 21. Proceeds from the event will aid in the restoration of Vartanov's Parajanov: The Last Spring film trilogy at UCLA.
