According to Steven Soderbergh, it may be a couple of years before we return to The Knick (or something like it), but in the meantime the semi-retired filmmaker is working on an ambitious HBO film with Sharon Stone, a potential return to the big screen, and producing three television series. We can add another project to his growing pile of work, as Soderbergh is set to reunite with Oscar-nominated Out of Sight scribe Scott Frank for a new Netflix series.

Soderbergh is always full of surprises, and Godless looks to be no exception. Although plot details on the project are scarce, Deadline reports that Soderbergh and Frank’s new Netflix series will find the pair exploring western territory with a story set in a New Mexico mining town in the 1800s. I don’t want to jump to wild conclusions here, but this sounds like it could be Soderbergh’s Deadwood — an incredibly exciting prospect, to say the least.

Soderbergh will executive produce Godless alongside Frank, with the latter also scripting and directing all 13 episodes of the limited series event. Though Soderbergh is not directing the series, the report declines to mention if we can expect the typically hands-on director to serve as editor or DP, as he did with Magic Mike XXL.

In addition to Out of Sight, Frank is also known for writing Minority Report and The Wolverine, and more recently the 2015 western A Walk Among the Tombstones, for which he also made his directorial debut.

Soderbergh is currently working on Mosaic, an innovative television film project for HBO starring Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Beau Bridges and Paul Reubens. In an interview with The Playlist, Soderbergh described the project as “abstract,” and said it should be ready to debut in early 2017.

He’s also producing Amazon’s Red Oaks, as well as The Girlfriend Experience series for Starz, with Amy Seimetz co-producing, writing and directing based on Soderbergh’s film. On top of all of that, Soderbergh is also planning on returning for The Knick Season 3 (which may feature some big changes and shoot back-to-back with Season 4), and there have been reports that he’s planning on directing a heist film starring Channing Tatum and Michael Shannon.
