Nestled in the heart of the Texas Panhandle, you'll find the wonder of Palo Duro Canyon - America's Second Grand Canyon. It is amazing.
Probably the most wild day trip a person could take. As you travel West, you'll climb 2400 feet in elevation to 3500 feet. Once you're in the Texas Panhandle, one amazing view can be found on the side of the road. Pull over, step out, and circle the horizon. It's perfectly flat. No rolling hills, no dipping lands... absolutely flat.

At some point, you'll come across Palo Duro Canyon State Park. In the midst of this perfectly flat caprock, the bottom suddenly drops out 800 feet. The canyon exposes four geological layers of the Earth, and the views are stunning.

Being only a few hours from Lawton, it's definitely a worthwhile trip to take over the weekend. The canyon features several cabins, renting from $60 a night. Some of these can be found in the bottom lands, others lining the canyon rim.

This 120 mile long, 800 foot deep wonder of nature was carved a million years ago by the powerful Red River that borders our states. It features walking and hiking trails, camping for the most modern and primitive people, biking trails, horse riding trails, and even off-road driving trails.

After a day in the canyon, drive North and explore Amarillo! Take on the 72 ounce Big Texan steak challenge, or grab some of the best Mexican food a person can eat at many of the authentic taquerias.
