New ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Clips Tease the Calm Before the War

All you needed to tell us to get our butts in the theater to see ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ is that it’s a sequel to the fantastic ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes,’ but these awesome trailers and clips are certainly sweetening the deal. The marketing barrage continues today with the release of two new clips from the film and a live Google+ hangout that will give fans a look at “exclusive content,” which we assume is ad-speak for “new footage.”

The first clip is good enough to give us chills. Caesar and his ape army, many of them on horseback and most of them heavily armed, gather in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic San Francisco. It’s a show of force, meant to intimidate/warn from the band of nearby humans (led by Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke) against their impending conflict. The CGI on the motion capture apes is fantastic and it’s going to be great to see actors as good as Oldman and Clarke face off against Andy Serkis‘ Caesar, who may be the greatest of modern sci-fi characters.

The second clip is far quieter and sweeter. There’s no conflict at all, it’s just Maurice the Orangutan (who you may remember from the first film) happening across a human camp, meeting a human who isn’t a total jerk, and having a lovely moment as they flip through a copy of Charles Burns’ ‘Black Hole.’

For those of you who missed the last film (where have you been?), here’s what you need to know before going into ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’

“A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”

You can watch the Google+ hangout below. The film opens in theaters on July 11.
