Texting and driving will now be against the law in the city of Midland.

According to our media partners at Newswest 9, the ban was unanimously passed today and will go into effect October 1.

The ban states "a driver shall not use a wireless communication device to view, send, or compose an electronic message, or engage other application software apps while operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway.”

That covers all distractions on your mobile device that would take your concentration off the road such as texting, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat just to name a few.

The only exceptions are making a phone call or using a GPS device.

The fine will be up to $500 for texting and driving.
