Metallica‘s “Enter Sandman” is one of the most popular songs in the history of heavy music. The band’s 1991 hit has been covered countless times by rock and metal acts as well as plenty of others outside of this musical realm. Robert Haglund is poised to release I Wanna Be Somebody, a covers album featuring “jazz” renditions of renowned rock and metal tunes, one of them being that timeless ‘Black Album’ cut.

As we’ve learned from covers of metal songs by the Alex Skolnick Trio, these jazz-inspired renditions are often far removed from the most identifiable aspects of the song at hand. This value holds true on Robert Haglund’s take on “Enter Sandman,” which he laid down with the help of former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick. That door-kicking guitar lick is deconstructed with a loose but beautiful arrangement that takes flight with the help of Haglund’s soothing croon.

I Wanna Be Somebody comes out Aug. 19 through MMS Records with Universal Music handling the distribution. The album spans 10 tracks featuring more jazz takes on some of rock and metal’s most sensational tracks like Motorhead‘s “Ace of Spades” and Dio‘s “Holy Diver.” See the full track listing below.

This is hardly the first time “Enter Sandman” has undergone a complete musical makeover. The mainstream crossover song is a household hit, purely inescapable. If you’re looking for more fascinating renditions of the Metallica classic, we’ve reported on Shel’s folk version, a wedding band’s bossa nova interpretation and a complete banjo cover if you feel like kickin’ up some dust with your spurs. Even Metallica themselves put a unique spin on their own song, picking up kid instruments on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and giving it a whirl.
