Megadeth Flying Born-Deaf YouTube Star to Las Vegas for First Rock Concert + Interview

If you’re the type to go YouTube surfing, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the video above. Having amassed nearly 21 million views, this video immortalizes the moment when Sarah Churman, who was born deaf, heard sound for the first time at 29 years of age. Countless tears have been shed witnessing Churman’s life-changing moment, apparently from members of Megadeth, as well, because the band is flying Sarah and her husband Sloan to Las Vegas to experience her first rock concert on Thursday (April 17).

Although Sarah didn’t hear her first note until she was 29, she grew up with music her whole life. Churman’s father was a songwriter and musician, but despite her unfortunate condition, Sarah was able to find joy in music. “Even though I couldn’t understand lyrics or different instruments, there was always a way to enjoy it,” Churman tells the Las Vegas Review Journal. “In my world, that was turning it up as loud as possible and feeling the vibrations.”

Touched by Sarah’s story, Megadeth offered to fly the Churman’s to Vegas and experience not only Megadeth, but Motorhead live, as well. “First trip to Vegas. First rock concert,” Churman adds. “There’s a lot of firsts happening. We pinch pennies and live on a shoestring, pretty much. So concerts are something we don’t get to go to very often. I’m excited.” When it was suggested that Churman bring earplugs to the show, Sarah replied, “Oddly enough, my cyborg parts — they have a governor on it. They shut down at a certain decibel, so you can’t damage anything.”

Additionally, Sarah has been asked by Megadeth to conduct an exclusive interview with frontman Dave Mustaine for a band project.

Sarah Churman documented her life-changing journey from 29 years of silence to the world of sound in the book ‘Powered On: The Sounds I Choose to Hear and the Noise I Don’t.’ To grab a copy of Sarah’s book, which holds a unanimous five-star rating by Amazon readers, click here.
