Mars Volta Members Unite With Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea for New Group Antemasque

The Mars Volta are no more, but we may have the next best thing. The band’s frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and onetime drummer Dave Elitch are teaming with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea to launch a new group called Antemasque.

For those wondering, Flea does have a history with the Mars Volta, previously appearing on a couple of tracks for their 2003 debut disc, ‘De-Loused in the Comatorium.’ He also lent his trumpet skills to 2005′s ‘Frances the Mute’ album.

The band announced their presence via a new video that showcases a recent studio session. In the video, you get a good glimpse of the band working through a song before the focus shifts to Flea. After laying down some bass to the already established musical backing, the Chili Peppers bassist has an open discussion about the bass he’s playing. The instrument, which features butterflies engrained in the paint job, was presented to Flea by visual artist Damien Hirst.

The Mars Volta revealed their split in 2013, with Bixler-Zavala confirming that despite his best efforts, the band had decided to go their separate ways. The vocalist stated that rather than a new Mars Volta disc, fans were treated to Rodriguez-Lopez’s new project Bosnian Rainbows instead.

But whatever animosity there may have been with the Mars Volta’s split appears to be over now as the vocalist and guitarist are both part of the Antemasque lineup. It should be noted that a post on the band’s Facebook page points to a link on The Mars Volta forum and states that, “This is a new full-time project (not a side gig).” The post also suggested that Rodriguez-Lopez would split his time between Antemasque and Bosnian Rainbows. Fans can also check out part of another song, ’4AM,’ in a video below.
