Last night (March 16) in Bogota, Colombia, Metallica debuted ‘The Lords of Summer,’ a new song from the thrash legends. Now that we’ve heard the song, fans are beginning to ponder how ‘The Lords of Summer’ will fit into Metallica’s next album. Now, drummer Lars Ulrich explains how the new song represents Metallica’s current creative mindset.

After promising the debut of a new track on their 2014 tour, Metallica came through and treated fans to a thrash track with lots of riffage during the opening gig in Colombia. Fans are buzzing about the song, flooding comments sections with first impressions of ‘The Lords of Summer.’

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Lars Ulrich speaks about ‘The Lords of Summer’ and how it shapes up against other new tracks which could potentially fill Metallica’s next full-length. “We promised our fans we’d play a new song and we’ve been writing and creating away and we’re going to throw something at them on Sunday,” Ulrich said in the interview, which was conducted before the Bogota show. “We have something lined up that is fairly representative of where our creative headspace is at right now. It’s one of those things that’s like, ‘Here, we’re writing and we’re creating.’”

Lars continues, “So who knows what’s going to happen with this stuff. But we are off and running and have been creating away in the studio and now we’re going to go out and play and sweat and share and we’ve got some new music that we want to throw everybody’s way. And maybe by the time we get to Europe, there will be a different song or different thing or different arrangement. Who knows? We’ll sort of take it one step at a time.”
