To this point, all the Injustice 2 details we've been able to glean from footage has mostly hinted at the roster and the customization options players will face. The narrative was a closely guarded secret until today's new trailer dropped. In addition to getting a few more hints at which fighters are making an appearance in the upcoming sequel, we also learned the massive threat at the core of the story will be none other than Brainiac himself.

The new footage is short on gameplay but heavy on cinematics. NetherRealm Studios hasn't shied away from including engaging narratives in its fighting games, and though Injustice's universe certainly has its quirks, you've got to give the devs credit for getting players invested in this world. Narrated by Brainiac, the trailer shows the state of the Injustice universe after the conclusion of the first game, with many heroes and villains still bickering and fighting over the direction the world should take after Superman's imprisonment.

As nice as all that is, the new teases for potential playable characters is that much more interesting. We get glimpses at known quantities like Supergirl and Wonder Woman, but Bane will also be coming back. They'll be joined for the first time by Robin and Poison Ivy, and with Batman, Deadshot and Harley Quinn already on board, that makes the roster very Arkham-heavy. Surely we'll see some other rogues pop up before the game's release in May. Perhaps even during the January 24 livestream NetherRealm is hosting.

Of course, we'd be remiss in not mentioning Darkseid getting his first fighting game appearance since Justice League Task Force back in 1995. We don't get to see a lot of Darkseid in the trailer, but he looks like he'll still be cutting one of the most imposing figures in the DCU even in the Injustice universe. He'll be available as a pre-order incentive, which is a bit of a bummer, but he'll likely be available for everyone else some time after Injustice 2 releases.

Injustice 2 will be out on May 16 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In the meantime, check out some screenshots and box art for the various editions of Injustice 2 below.
