A Welsh man who became a viral video star and hero for grabbing a shark and steering it away from children wading in Australia has gotten fired for his heroic deed.

British newspaper reporters say that the man and his wife, who work for the Pant and Dowlais Boys and Girls Club in Wales, had taken extended sick leave for stress when they decided to take a two-month vacation to Australia.

The viral video below is what was cited as the reason for the termination.  According to the man, "The dismissal letter said: 'Whilst unfit to work you were well enough to travel to Australia...[where]...you allegedly grabbed a shark by the tail and narrowly missed being bitten by quickly jumping out of the way."

The 62-year-old man said ironically he got fired for saving children, and his job was with a children's charity.  "If I hadn't gone in to save the kids on that beach that day, my wife and I would still have a job."
