Gus G + Suicide Silence’s Mark Heylmun Talk Mitch Lucker + Guitars in ‘Metalhead to Head’ Episode
Guitarists Gus G (Ozzy Osbourne, Firewind) and Mark Heylmun (Suicide Silence) sat down for the latest episode of Fuse TV’s ‘Metalhead to Head’ (watch part one above and part two below). There was a lot of shredding and funny stories about times their guitar kill switches accidentally engaged on stage.
But they also discussed more serious subjects, like the death of Suicide Silence frontman Mitch Lucker. “I was in Greece when I read that Mitch passed away,” Gus said. “I was like, ‘wow, what happened there?’ What a terrible loss.”
“It was brutal,” Heylmun replied. “I was at home and it was Halloween night. The worst thing about that is that we had already written some new music and we were going to do vocals on some demos we had the very next day. I was at home, just taking it easy, going to go into the studio the next day. That’s when I found out.”
Heylmun continued, “As far as us as a group of dudes, I joined the band when I was 17. We’ve never really lost that love for jamming. Everything being so tragic, I’m proud of us for coming around and not letting that ruin us.”
The two virtuosos went on to demonstrate picking techniques. Heylmun explains Suicide Silence’s use of the “bloody chord,” and the two do an on-the-spot collaboration.
Heylmun also revealed the progress of Suicide Silence’s new album: “We just got out of the studio. We were in the studio for almost two months with our new guy. His name is Eddie (Hermida). He’s great. The record is phenomenal. I can’t wait for people to hear it. It’s more everything. It’s more guitar-y, it’s more vocal-y, it’s everything, but more.”
