‘Godzilla’ Sequel Begins Production With Monstrous New Plot Details

Godzilla
Legendary/Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially announced the start of production on their new Godzilla sequel, with Krampus director Michael Dougherty at the helm of the film that brings us one step closer to an epic crossover with Kong. Although the previously revealed title — Godzilla: King of the Monsters — is curiously absent from this morning’s announcement, it does offer some intriguing new plot details…including which classic monsters we can expect to see in the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 blockbuster.

Let’s just cut right to the good stuff. Here is the first synopsis for the Godzilla sequel, which is based on a script by Dougherty and Zach Shields:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.  When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe will reprise their roles from the first film for the sequel, which also stars Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown (making her big screen debut), Bradley Whitford, Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi.

As the synopsis reveals, Godzilla will do battle with not one, not two, but three classic monsters: Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah — news that should make fans of the prolific franchise quite happy.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s crew includes cinematographer Lawrence Sher (who previously shot Edwards’ Godzilla), production designer Scott Chambliss (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), editor Roger Barton (the Transformers series) and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (whose recent credits include Ghost in the Shell and the first Godzilla).

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (or whatever they end up calling it) is filming in Atlanta, Georgia for a March 2019 release. It will be followed by Godzilla vs. Kong, which recently tapped Blair Witch and The Guest director Adam Wingard to helm and is set to hit theaters in 2020.
