You are already aware that you are not supposed to trash your boss or post drunk photos on Facebook, but that is not the only way social media could ruin your career.  Here are five ways you probably haven't even thought about.

  1. If you are liking stuff all the time.  This makes you look like you are wasting time if you are constantly on Facebook clicking the "like" button.  Also remember not to "like" anything remotely racial or offensive, even if its a joke.
  2. Your profile picture.  Hiring managers will look you up on Facebook.  Stay away from drunken looking pictures or pictures from ten or more years ago.
  3. You are using the wrong e-mail address.  Make sure the e-mail address on your Facebook is not too casual sounding like bobhateswork@slacker.com.  You should have an e-mail address that includes your real first and last name that is also attached to your Facebook log in as well.
  4. You haven't set strict privacy settings on your account.  You think might think all your posts are tame and G-rated, but you still need to lock your account.  If you don't, it makes you look irresponsible if someone checks.
  5. Be careful of your friends.  You need to be careful about how your friends interact with you.  Make sure you are aware when they tag you in inappropriate photos or write stupid comments on your page, this makes YOU look bad, not them.
